Nylon 6 – Polyamide

Category: Engineering Plastics, Laminates and Composites

Description

PA material, Polyamide or commonly called nylon, is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with low density and high thermal stability. Nylon plastic is one of the most important construction plastics due to its excellent wear resistance, good coefficient of friction and very good temperature resistance and impact strength. Designations for Polyamide plastic often occur in conjunction with numbers such as PA 6, PA 66, PA 12 and PA 46. These numbers refer to the molecular structure of the PA polymer. Each type of structure offers different properties.

A typical nylon characteristic is to absorb water. Depending on the type, polyamide absorbs different amounts of moisture. Therefore, the design of such parts must consider the water absorption of nylon and the associated change in dimensions and mechanical properties.

Nylon (PA) 6 Extruded

Extruded Nylon 6 offers a balanced combination of performance and cost that provides users with an optimal engineering plastic for standard applications.

  • Good mechanical stability
  • High impact strength & shock resistance
  • Very good abrasion resistance
  • High tensile stress & compressive strength
  • Good damping properties
  • Colours: Natural or Black
  • Sheets : 1mm to 8mm thick
  • Rods from 6 mm to 45 mm diameter
  • Tubes made to order
  • Weakness: Material is hydroscopic

Applications: General-purpose material, washers, bushes, spacers, guides, gears, wheels, etc

Cast Nylon (PA) 6 - Natural

A distinction is made between semi-finished polyamide products produced by extrusion and those produced by casting. Extrusion is generally a cheaper manufacturing process suitable for smaller sheets, rods and tubes with high production volumes, whereas the casting process is more suited to large parts with less internal stress and lower quantities. To improve certain properties, both extruded and cast nylons can be modified using fillers.

Natural cast nylon offers a combination of good mechanical properties, excellent bearing and wear characteristics, and the large size capabilities of the casting process. The cast polyamide’s fatigue resistance, noise-damping ability, corrosion resistance, and light weight make cast Nylon 6 ideal for metal replacement applications, such as bearings, gears, sheaves, and sprockets. At one-eighth the weight of bronze, cast Nylon 6 is easier to handle and maintain than metals such as iron, aluminium, brass, and bronze, which it typically replaces in industrial wear applications.

  • Superior mechanical properties to Extruded Nylon 6
  • Better mechanical and dimensional stability
  • Good dampening
  • Good slide and wear properties
  • Lower water absorption
  • Higher wear resistance
  • Good creep resistance
  • Colours: Natural white
  • Sheets: 10mm to 100mm thick
  • Rods from 50 mm to 250 mm diameter
  • Tubes made to order
  • Weakness: Material is hydroscopic

Applications: Large diameter components, gear wheels, pulleys, guide bearings, slide bearings, mechanical industry, food technology, heavy-duty industry, etc

Cast Nylon 6 (PA) - Filled Grades Black MoS2 Cast Nylon 6 (PA)

Black cast nylon material modified by the addition of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). The addition of MoS2 brings about an increase in the degree of crystallinity, lending the cast polyamide a higher degree of strength, but without any appreciable deterioration of toughness. In addition, increasing the crystallinity of this PA 6 C results in improved surface hardness and better abrasion properties compared to standard PA 6 cast.

  • Good dampening
  • Good slide and wear properties
  • Higher wear resistance
  • Good creep resistance
  • Improved coefficient of friction
  • High toughness
  • Resistant to many oils, greases and fuels
  • Good damping
  • High strength
  • Weakness: Material is hydroscopic
  • Colour: Black
  • Sheets: 10 mm to 100 mm thick
  • Rods from 50 mm to 250 mm diameter
  • Tubes made to order
Oil Filled Cast Nylon 6 (PA)

This cast nylon polyamide is modified with a special oil lubricant, which is particularly suitable for sliding applications and in dry running conditions. Homogeneous distribution of the lubricant ensures consistent sliding and abrasion behaviour over the entire service life of the part. Particularly notable about this product is its low stick-slip susceptibility and a very low sliding wear rate.

        • Good dampening
        • Good slide and wear properties
        • Higher wear resistance
        • Good creep resistance
        • Further improved coefficient of friction over MoS2
        • High toughness
        • Resistant to many oils, greases and fuels
        • good damping
        • High strength
        • Weakness: Material is hydroscopic
        • Colour: Green
        • Sheets: 10mm to 100mmthk
        • Rods from 20 mm to 250 mm diameter
        • Tubes made to order
Wax Filled Cast Nylon 6 (PA)

Wax-filled nylon is a supreme abrasion-resistant grade which contains a blended wax lubrication system, uniformly distributed to radically improve wear resistance and coefficient of friction characteristics. The material has excellent mechanical properties and exhibits outstanding pressure velocity (PV) capabilities. This grade, like oil-filled nylon, is particularly suited to dry-running bearing applications.

        • Good dampening
        • Good slide and wear properties
        • Better pressure velocity (PV) capability than MoS2 and oil-filled grades
        • Higher wear resistance
        • Good creep resistance
        • Further improved coefficient of friction over MoS2 and oil-filled grades
        • High toughness
        • Resistant to many oils, greases and fuels
        • High strength
        • Weakness: Material is hydroscopic
        • Sheets: 10 mm to 100 mm thick
        • Rods from 20 mm to 250 mm diameter
        • Tubes made to order
